Sexually Transmitted Disease should be taken seriously

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in this country, half among young people ages 15-24.

Many people use both STI and STD interchangeably when discussing sexual health. An STI is an infection that does not show any physical signs or symptoms. It is contracted from another infected person through sexual activity, including vaginal, oral and anal sex, and skin-to-skin contact.

It becomes an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) when symptoms appear. It’s important to remember that not all infected people will have signs or symptoms. You do not have to have symptoms to be contagious; you can spread the disease any time you engage in sexual behavior.

Beyond the specific risks of each STD, women who are pregnant may have increased or additional risks by having an abortion while infected with an STD. You owe it to yourself to be properly tested before weighing your options.

If you are considering an abortion, STD/STI screening is extremely important because during the procedure, an STD/STI can be spread throughout the reproductive system causing additional complications. For instance, if you test positive for Gonorrhea or Chlamydia and have an abortion before you are treated, your risk of getting Pelvic Inflammatory Disease increases. All women considering an abortion should be tested for STD/ STIs, even if they are not experiencing any symptoms to ensure that there are no possible complications.
